Western nutrition focuses on the biochemical level of food and how to improve health through vitamins and supplements that may be deficient in one’s diet. Chinese nutrition differs from Western nutrition in that it does not talk about the biochemical nature of food. Rather, Chinese nutrition deals on an energetic level to which balance is the key. Foods are selected according to their energetic qualities such as: warming, cooling, drying, or lubricating. For example, you may know someone who only eats salads and drinks diet coke, but still struggles with their weight. According to Chinese philosophy, they have an imbalance of cold raw foods which can lead to weight gain. To correct the imbalance, warming foods and herbs would be given.
